Silver Mines Recreation Area. This is an abandoned mining town on the St. Francois River with shut-ins, foot bluffs and scenic hiking trails. There is a 2-mile Silver Mines Trail which follows both sides of the river, leading to various picnic areas. Page in the Best of Tent Camping book. We picked Silver Mines because it had water access and was close to home. The park is beautiful, I love the scenery of the St. Francois River with it’s huge rock formations! Silver Mines, Missouri - Camping & Campgrounds Silver Mines Campground is located on the St. Francis River in the Mark Twain National Forest. Silver Mines Recreation Area Campgrounds The campgrounds include: 75 campsites; a group site; 17 picnic sites; drinking water; and vault toilets. Each campsite has a table, lantern post and fire ring; some have electric on: Route D, Fredericktown, , MO.   Silver Mines – Area Recreation. The St. Francis River offers some nice whitewater for kayaking during the spring. Other outdoor recreation includes fishing, hiking, picnicking, swimming, mountain biking and wildlife viewing. You can also visit historic sites in the area. You may also like Johnson Shut Ins State on: Highway D, Ironton, , Missouri. The Silver Mine area of Harriman State Park offers picnic grounds, fishing and hiking. Biking - helmets required. Fishing - NYS fishing license required. Launch Sites - Boat permit required. Dogs only, must be on a leash not more than 6 feet at all times. Not allowed in buildings or beach/bathing areas. Must display rabies tag. All three located along or near Silver Mine Run, about 1 1/2 miles East of Conestoga and 4 miles NW of Lancaster. Started before Pequea Silver Mine C now lies on a Conestoga Township Park. Mineral collecting is forbidden. The site has a self-guided geologic walking trail which is fairly rugged and not handicap accessible.

  This was our first time staying at Silver Mines Recreation Area. There are three campgrounds which are part of the RA and lie within the Mark Twain National Forest. We stayed in the Riverside campground which included 30 amp electric. The other two campgrounds are primitive though there is room for small rv's.5/5(2). From hiking and fishing to swimming and boating, Silver Mines Recreation Area is a host to many visitors throughout the year. The area consists of 75 . The Silver Mines Campground sits on historic mining land along the banks of the St. Francis River. Whitewater rafting and kayaking are popular, especially in the spring. An annual kayaking competition is held on the river on the third week of March (depending on water levels), so come cheer on the athletes!%(2).
